Dr. Lam was raised in Dallas and finished his secondary education at Cistercian Preparatory School, where he graduated as Valedictorian. He completed his undergraduate studies at Princeton University graduating with a Cum Laude distinction, and his medical school at Baylor College of Medicine, where he received the distinction from his peers of the Bobby R. Alford Award for outstanding achievement in otolaryngology-head & neck surgery. He then trained for six years at Columbia University in head and neck surgery. After completion of his residency, he pursued a competitive post-graduate fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery in New York. He has also spent considerable time abroad studying under prominent Japanese and Korean surgeons to perfect his knowledge of the Asian face after his cosmetic surgery fellowship. His principal training has catered to the Caucasian face, which his first textbook, Comprehensive Facial Rejuvenation: A Practical and Systematic Guide to Surgical Management of the Aging Face (Lippincott, Williams, and Wilkins, Philadelphia, PA, 2003/ ISBN: 0-7817-5093-8), addresses. Dr. Lam has spent almost twelve years of specialty training after college and is a dedicated specialist of the face. He is board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, the American Board of Otolaryngology serving the specialty of Head & Neck Surgery, and the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. He is also a fellow member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and a fellow member of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Lam has authored over 100 scientific papers and book chapters and has had many of his articles translated into French and Spanish (both of which he speaks). Dr. Lam's articles have been published in every major plastic surgery journal, including Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, Facial Plastic Surgery, Aesthetic Surgery, Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Annals of Plastic Surgery, Dermatologic Surgery, Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery among many others. Dr. Lam has published on the full gamut of facial plastic surgery including fat transfer, browlifting, eyelid rejuvenation, midfacelifting, threadlifting, chemical peeling, laser resurfacing, plasma resurfacing, Botox, rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty, hair restoration, ethnic eyelid and nose surgery, facial fracture repair, treatment of congential malformations, and clinical digital photography. His interest in history, awakened when he was a European history major at Princeton University, has led him to publish many articles on the history and development of facial plastic surgery. He has also published numerous monographs on artists who have influencd his aesthetic perspective and encouraged his entry into painting and creation of his own art.

He has completed work on four major textbooks, Cosmetic Surgery of the Asian Face (Thieme Medical Publishers, New York, NY, 2005), Comprehensive Facial Rejuvenation, Complementary Fat Grafting (Lippincott, Williams, and Wilkins, Philadelphia, PA, 2006), and Simplified Facial Rejuvenation (Springer Verlag, New York, NY, 2007). The former is the only textbook written on cosmetic surgery of the Asian face in the English language. Comprehensive Facial Rejuvenation is the most comprehensive textbook on management of the aging face including both the latest surgical and dermatological techniques to address the maturing face. Dr. Lam's third textbook, Complementary Fat Grafting, revolutionizes the way the aging face is perceived and managed. Up until the present day, all techniques for facial rejuvenation have been based on cutting away and removing tissue. Fat grafting involves restoring lost volume for sunken cheeks, eyes, and jawlines that occur during the aging process. Dr. Lam believes that his third book will help plastic surgeons rethink everything they have been taught about how to manage the aging face. Dr. Lam’s books have been top sellers and have consistently sold out at major scientific meetings and throughout the world, being translated into Spanish, Portuguese, and Korean.

Dr. Lam is also the 2002 recipient of the John Orlando Roe Research Award for his work on skin rejuvenation presented to him by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Foundation. Dr. Lam has lectured over 100 times both nationally and internationally on numerous scientific topics and has been a course instructor for local, national, and international courses on the aging face as well as performed live surgical demonstrations on the latest, most advanced rejuvenation surgeries in front of hundreds of plastic surgeons. His international lectures have taken him as far as South America and to Asia. He lectures nationally almost every month and oftentimes twice a month nationally throughout the entire year. He has organized as course director both national and international meetings for facial plastic surgery. Dr. Lam's passion for teaching has led him to open the Lam Institute Training Program to train both physicians and hair-transplant assistants across the world on follicular-unit and multiple-unit grafting in hair restoration. The program offers the flexibility of both on-site (at the physician's office) and off-site (at Dr. Lam's facility) intensive training and coaching in advanced hair restoration using Dr. Lam's unique combination-grafting approach. Dr. Lam conducts workshops throughout the year on Botox and other dermal fillers for scores of physicians. He has also been selected as national educational faculty for Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox. He also has numerous surgeons, almost every month, fly to train under his tutelage from as far as Europe, Canada, and South America.

He serves on the editorial board for the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, has been a guest editor for Facial Plastic Surgery, is a reviewer for Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, and is on multiple committees for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has also contributed his expertise in the design of the oral and written examination for the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, of which he is a diplomate.

Dr. Lam is unique in the industry for his pioneering work in creating the 27,000 square-foot Willow Bend Wellness Center. His goal was to create a "one-stop aesthetic and wellness boutique" where one could receive all the amenities of aesthetic and wellness services under one roof, including high-end hairstyling of José Eber, premier spa services at the Spa at Willow Bend, the Luminaire Laser Center, the Anti-Aging & Vitality Center of Dallas, iVital Lap-Band Weight Loss Center, Invena Laser Vein Center, Solberg Center for Structural Integration, Dr. Ku's cosmetic dental services, and on-site surgical services at the Lam Facial Plastic Surgery Center. Dr. Lam has lectured across the United States on the development of medical spas and the proper physician relationship with these entities and has served on the educational committee for the Medical Spa Professional Alliance. Dr. Lam was recently honored for his work in creating the Willow Bend Wellness Center as well as his innovative work in facial plastic surgery by his inclusion in the book, Medicine Men. Dr. Lam has been featured on CBS News, ABC News, ABC Good Morning Texas, Fox News, the Oxygen Channel , and in the local and national media on numerous occasions. Dr. Lam has also served as a plastic surgery consultant to Dr. Phil and to the Montel Williams Show.

He is an accomplished and published photographer and illustrator. He completed all of the illustrations for his three medical textbooks along with many drawings for his scientific articles and book chapters. He enjoys painting during his free time and has on display over 150 of his original paintings in the new wellness center. He has taken many underwater photographs and has dived across the world as a certified PADI divemaster. He has had his photography published in the Miami Herald. Dr. Lam also created all of the logo designs for his practice and most of the logos and graphic art for the building and his tenants. Dr. Lam has served on the board of directors for the Plano Symphony Orchestra for the past three years and is now on their Advisory Council. He was the past Vice Chairman of the Columbia University Club of North Texas and is a member of the Dallas Chapter of the Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO).
