Asian Facial Cosmetic Surgery/Asian Double Eyelid/Asian Rhinoplasty/Etc.
have gained increasing popularity over the past decade.
With advanced techniques and more surgical options, Asian
patients are seeking cosmetic surgery at a quickening pace.
Although traditional Western techniques may be appropriate in select
cases, Asian
Facial Cosmetic Surgery requires cultural sensitivity and
unique strategies that preserve a natural appearance but enhance beauty.
Dr. Lam's 2nd textbook, Cosmetic
Surgery of the Asian Face, describes the many different
state-of-the-art methods currently advocated, combining the best from
the West and the East.
DOUBLE EYELID
ASIAN FACIAL SURGERY
 |
Creation of a natural-appearing "double eyelid"
Asian upper-eyelid surgery represents the most
common surgical procedure for the Asian
face. Two decades ago, "Westernization"
of the upper eyelid constituted the most frequent
request for those who elected to undergo this type of procedure.
Today, many Asians recognize that a very high
lid crease and overzealous removal of upper-lid fat impart a foreign
and unnatural look to their face. Furthermore, a hollow eye that
may appear attractive on a Caucasian face may indicate premature
aging in the Asian
patient.
Dr. Lam carefully discusses with you the aesthetic look that you
desire and matches that objective with a selection of techniques.
For younger patients who desire a double eyelid, the partial-incision
technique provides a short recovery time with excellent cosmetic
results. For the older patient, a full-incision method may be
more appropriate. Dr. Lam no longer uses the “suture”
technique, as this method has shown to have a high failure rate
over time. Dr. Lam has trained extensively with all the techniques
and offers the patient the widest range of surgical options to
achieve the desired look. In his book, Cosmetic
Surgery of the Asian Face, Dr. Lam instructs
other physicians how to perform these different procedures correctly.
This landmark publication represents the only major textbook on
Asian
facial cosmetic surgery in the English language.
Elimination of the "Epicanthal fold" In addition to double-eyelid surgery, Dr. Lam also performs surgery to soften or eliminate the so-called "epicanthal fold", the web-like skin fold that drapes over the inner part of the eye. This fold can make the eye look distinctly ethnic and may not always be a desirable trait. In addition, a wide fold can make the nose appear even flatter and broader, and small correction of this fold can improve even the way the nose looks. Inner and outer folds and different eye shapes are all possible with the right surgical technique.
Modifying the outer part of the eye via "Lateral Canthoplasty" As a result of the double-eyelid procedure, the eye will look wider, more open, and less "sleepy" looking. However, if the patient desires an even wider eye that still appears natural, Dr. Lam offers his technique that addresses the outer side of the eyelid. He can widen the eye even further in conjunction with the double-eyelid procedure and/or the removal of the "epicanthal fold".

ASIAN NOSE
FACIAL SURGERY |
Asian noses are different The Asian nose is distinctly different from that of the Caucasian. The nasal bridge is less prominent and the tip of the nose wider and less angular than the Caucasian. The cartilages are more fragile and the overlying skin tissue thicker. Even the way the Asian nose breathes is different from the Caucasian nose, as the nasal septum (the partition that divides the nostrils) is infrequently deviated and the same restrictive zones that obstruct Caucasian breathing do not apply to the Asian nose. Therefore, surgery of the Asian nose mandates an entirely different technique that is unsuitable for the Caucasian nose.
Augmentation Rhinoplasty, making the nose more prominent and well defined
The main objective of most Asian rhinoplasties is making the nose more prominent and well defined. The flat nasal profile demands a higher bridge both to support eyeglasses more effectively and to appear more beautiful. Traditional Western techniques fail to provide adequate elevation of the nasal bridge. Solid silicone implants have been problematic in that they create a "popsicle stick" appearance and can shift and migrate downward over time due to their weight. For these reasons, Dr. Lam no longer uses silicone implants for augmentation rhinoplasty.
What approaches are available?
Dr. Lam uses many different techniques for sculpting the Asian
nose depending on a patient's anatomy and personal
preference. Dr. Lam often uses a combination approach with cartilage
grafting in the tip and other materials in the bridge of the
nose for elevation like Gore-Tex. He also has
successfully provided natural nasal contouring with one's
own body
fat. After a detailed consultaiton with Dr. Lam will you
understand which approach(es) would be best for you. |
DIMPLE CREATION FACIAL SURGERY |
In the West, dimples
are oftentimes viewed as cute and adorable. In the Orient, a dimple
may offer the bearer a higher marriage prospect, greater fertility,
or simply better fortune, as traditional folklore purports. Dr.
Lam is very skilled at making surgically created dimples
that look seamlessly natural and that do not require any skin
incision. The procedure is done in a few minutes in the office
setting, and he can create 1 to 4 dimples depending on your preference. |
JAW REDUCTION
FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY |
Many invasive techniques have arisen throughout
Asia to reduce the size of a prominent jawline.
However, Dr. Lam advocates a simple solution to reduce the size
and flare of one’s jawline. A wide jawline
can make the Asian
face look flatter in appearance and is a trait more
common in particular in the Korean ethnicity.
However, Dr. Lam has applied his technique in many Asian
ethnicities, including Chinese and Vietnamese
patients, as well as in Caucasian individuals. In particular,
a female with a broader jawline may have an unflattering, masculine
appearing face. Within minutes, Dr. Lam can transform the lower
face without the use of any incisions using Botox. |
LIP REDUCTION
FACIAL COSMETIC SURGERY |
At times full and luscious lips may not be desired by everyone. Overly protuberant lips can be signs of a negative ethnic stereotype and may benefit from lip reduction depending on individual perception and desire. This simple office procedure can be done without any sedation in a few minutes time without feeling any discomfort whatsoever. You must maintain a soft diet for 3 days after the procedure, and improvement is typically not observed until 2 to 3 months have gone by. |
