RECONSTRUCTIVE
PLASTIC SURGERY PROCEDURES | | Part of the task of a facial
plastic surgeon is to restore the integrity to a traumatized
or injured face. Beyond the physical impairment, facial trauma
often leads to severe psychological suffering because of the prominent
and central position of the face. Skin cancer, if caught
early, can prevent more disfiguring outcomes for the patient. However,
even advanced cases can be successfully addressed with the use of reconstructive
techniques. Dr. Lam always balances artistic sensitivity with technical
execution to provide the most favorable long-term outcome for the patient.
SKIN CANCER RECONSTRUCTIVE PLASTIC SURGERY | Skin cancer has become an alarming epidemic today. The incidence of melanoma has steadily increased in an exponential fashion over the past several decades. Fortunately, people are becoming more educated about preventative measures, such as topical sun protection (SPF) agents and general avoidance of prolonged sun exposure. Early detection and treatment have facilitated better survival rates and avoidance of the need for extensive, disfiguring surgical resection.
Dr. Lam has trained extensively in removal of skin cancer and reconstruction of the defect in the most aesthetically restorative method with a diverse array of "flap" techniques. At times, multi-stage procedures will provide the best option for effective camouflage of extensive defects or defects that reside in particular facial zones. But, oftentimes, a single surgical procedure is sufficient to restore the patient to a normal appearance. Dr. Lam is very sensitive about the ultimate aesthetic appearance and will not compromise in his goal to provide the best surgical solution for the patient.

TRAUMA
RECONSTRUCTIVE PLASTIC SURGERY | Traumatic injury to the face can have severe psychological and physical repercussions. The victim of motor-vehicle accident, domestic abuse, or other type of assault may be left with an indelible imprint of the injury. Facial injury leaves the most conspicuous emblem of harm for all to see. Dr. Lam's goal is always to return the individual to a normal life through attentive and timely surgery. Bony fractures that involve the jaw, cheek, or nose are within the sphere of Dr. Lam's expertise as well as related soft-tissue and skin injuries. |
RECONSTRUCTIVE PLASTIC SURGERY ─ SCAR REVISION |
Traumatic facial scarring can
be a disfiguring and psychologically disturbing problem. Many
types of scarring can occur. For example, a very
raised, sometimes itchy scar that arises may
indicate that a keloid has formed. These types
of scars are more predominant in darker skinned individuals like
African-Americans and respond to excision followed
by repeated steroid injections until they settle down. Wider,
slightly raised, or depressed scars are usually
amenable to excision and reconstruction. Dr. Lam performs the
most meticulous scar excision using a whole range
of techniques depending on the type of scar,
its location, and the type of skin of the individual. Dr. Lam’s
expertise in the face and in reconstructive facial techniques
permits the most suitable approach to help reduce the unsightliness
of your scar. If the scar is
contracted, i.e., bunched up and shortened, nearby facial
structures can be affected, like pulling on the lip,
eyelid, or nose. Dr. Lam employs
a special type of scar
revision that permits him to lengthen the scar
to release the deformity on neighboring tissues. The most advanced
scar
revision that he performs in the select individual
is known as a “geometric broken-line repair”
that requires alignment of miniaturized different shapes, which
is followed 6 weeks later by mechanical dermabrasion, to provide
the optimal camouflage for your scar. Only after a detailed consultation
with Dr. Lam will you begin to understand which procedure might
be best for you. |
