Mole Removal Surgery
Mole removal require both superior surgical technique as well as uncompromising after care. This is why Dr. Lam rarely if ever performs mole removal in patients who do not reside in the Dallas area or immediate surrounding metroplex. Without being able to offer the needed follow-up to ensure that the cosmetic result is as perfect as he can deliver, he feels that he is ultimately doing a disservice to the discerning patient and to his own demanding drive for the best results possible.
Mole Removal Pre-care
Mole removal pre-care workup involves first whether the mole (medical term for mole is nevus) should be removed given the location on the face, the size, the unsightly cosmetic nature of the mole, or if the mole possesses other attributes that would suggest a malignancy. That is also why Dr. Lam always sends the removed specimen for pathological evaluation to ensure that the mole is not cancerous. Dr. Lam then routinely injects botulinum toxin a day or a week before mole removal in many cases in order to limit “stretch back” of the skin that can compromise the aesthetic result. He then designs the pattern of excision based on how collagen bundles align on the skin (so-called relaxed skin tension lines), and he performs every mole removal using microscope loupe magnification for ultimate precision. Using a multiple layered wound closure, he relies on buried, dissolvable sutures to further limit stretch back in the coming months during healing. He also slightly everts the wound edges using the final layer of sutures so that the wound edge does not sink inward and lead to a depressed skin edge.
Mole Removal Aftercare
Mole removal aftercare requires meticulous follow up. Generally, afterward sutures are removed at one week, Dr. Lam likes to see his patients about a month afterward to ensure that there is no early tendency toward scar formation. If so, he combines a non-invasive laser therapy to modulate the scar and/or non-steroid based injections to reverse the tendency toward scarring. Subsequent to the mole removal, he plans mechanical dermabrasion in many cases to further blur the visibility of the incision line usually as early as 6 weeks following mole removal, but typically a few months afterward when the healing is much more complete. Careful follow-up for the entire first year helps ensure that Dr. Lam can offer you the best cosmetic outcome following your mole excision.
