Dr. Lam's Approach

1. Dr. Lam evaluates one’s lip excess using artistic judgment based on one’s facial shape, gender, ethnicity, proportion and shape of the upper and lower lips, degree of unnaturalness, and functional nature of the lips. He uniquely reduces the proportional degree of wet and dry lips to achieve both reliable outcomes and superior results. In general, Dr. Lam does not only want to reduce the size of the lips but also wants to ensure that their shape is attractive too. He will reduce the lip based on the excess that he sees. As a basic rule, he reduces the top lip in a trapezoid shape and the bottom lip in a bikini shape to accentuate the natural curves of a lip and to visually break a lip that may otherwise appear like a uniform sausage.

2. Dr. Lam performs his procedures completely awake. This is initially alarming until you realize that you are experiencing absolutely no discomfort during the procedure. Dr. Lam is excellent at dental blocks where you don’t even feel the block being administered. This is hard to believe until you have experienced his magical touch.

Lip Reduction Recovery and Aftercare

Recovery after lip reduction involves allowing the lips to heal and the initial postoperative changes to settle before evaluating the final result. Because Dr. Lam performs lip reduction completely awake using dental blocks, patients can avoid the recovery associated with deeper anesthesia.

Dr. Lam and his team will provide individualized aftercare instructions and explain the expected recovery during your consultation. Patients traveling from outside Dallas should also discuss their travel plans with the office so they understand how long they should remain in the area and whether any return visits will be necessary.

How Much Does Lip Reduction Cost in Dallas?

The cost of a lip reduction depends on your anatomy, the degree of reduction or correction needed, and the procedure’s complexity. Because every lip reduction is customized to create the appropriate size, shape, and proportion, there is no single price that applies to everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions about Lip Reduction

If I am coming from out of town, can I fly out the same day?

Yes. However, Dr. Lam asks that you leave plenty of time following his procedure before your flight is scheduled to leave. He does not want to rush to perform your procedure, and he does not want you to rush to go to the airport. Further, many patients ask him if he would recommend for them to stay for a few days; and his response is simply that is not needed. There is really no risk that Dr. Lam is reasonably worried about that would encourage you to stay in Dallas. However, if you choose to do so, that is no problem. His staff will work with you to find a reasonably priced and close hotel. Waiting a few days will not make the lip look appreciably better, as the first week or two the sutures are very visible and the area does not look much less swollen in the first week. You will be given a surgical mask to wear on the plane to make your journey back home less conspicuous or obvious whenever you should fly home.

How long is my recovery?

The first 1-2 weeks will be very visible because there will be swelling and visible sutures/stitches. The stitches will dissolve in the first 1 to 2 weeks. After 10 days, any stitches that remain can be carefully trimmed if they are too visible or can be left alone to dissolve in the ensuing days. The lips will be mildly swollen for even a few weeks thereafter. Because most people are unfamiliar with a lip reduction surgery, you can easily proffer a small white lie and say you either had an accident or some gum surgery, which may pass as the truth. The lips will remain tight, numb, and may even fold-in unnaturally when you smile (especially the top lip) for the first few weeks to even a month or two. Do not be alarmed. This will settle. It may take up to six months for the lips to achieve the desired outcome. During the first few days to a week, the lips may bleed, will feel numb, and even a few stitches may unravel and cause a minor separation in a few cases, but in all of these cases things should heal well over time. Again, do not be alarmed.

Would I have to fly back to Dallas for any treatments?

Typically, no. Lips can stay firm to touch for even a few months. In rare cases, an injection of scar dissolver may be helpful if the lip remains thicker to touch for a few months. Dr. Lam will not charge you for this treatment. However, you will be responsible for any flights back to Dallas. He prefers that you wait because in most cases this condition resolves. In very rare cases, African-Americans/Blacks may have a visibly thicker incision line. This may require such an injection. Dr. Lam prefers to perform the injection because he can do it painlessly compared to his colleagues and he will not charge you for it. If you would desire further reduction of your lips and if Dr. Lam believes it would be safe for you, you will be charged a modest cost for this. However, you should not need to do this in most cases.

Can lip reduction be performed on only one lip?

Yes, lip reduction can be performed on only the upper or lower lip when that is the only area of concern. Treating both lips is not automatically necessary.

Can I have lip reduction if I previously had lip augmentation?

Previous lip augmentation does not necessarily prevent someone from undergoing lip reduction later. The type of augmentation and the current condition of the lip tissues need to be evaluated first.

Does having braces affect lip reduction?

Braces can influence the relationship between the lips and underlying teeth and may also affect surgical planning inside the mouth. Patients with orthodontic appliances should discuss them with Dr. Lam before proceeding.

Can lip reduction affect eating or drinking?

Eating and drinking can temporarily feel different following a procedure involving the lips. Patients may need to modify how they eat during the early healing period according to Dr. Lam's instructions.
