The Emotional Side of Otoplasty

This past week I performed an otoplasty on a 72-year-old woman who could have benefited from other rejuvenative procedures but chose otoplasty as her number one concern. As you know, most people associate otoplasty, cosmetic pinning of protruding ears, as a childhood surgery performed most commonly on 6-12 year old range. However, you may be surprised to learn that most of my otoplasties, somewhat like 90 plus percent, are done in adults rather than children. I think part of the reason that this drive toward otoplasty in later years may be caused by the emergence of social media to celebrate the normalness of undergoing otoplasty at a later age. It could also be that as adults more people are simply old enough to make decisions for themselves and thinking that otoplasty would be worth it to pursue. Otoplasty is a procedure that I perform probably more often than most surgeons out there, most likely due to the fact that I have numerous before and after photographs along with testimonials since I dedicate myself to the art and craft of otoplasty surgery. It is something that in my opinion can provide as strong an emotional boost as anything else that I do. Unfortunately, there can be a legacy of childhood teasing and insecurity that accompanies more prominent ears that, once corrected, may lead to a brighter emotional disposition. If you are an adult and thinking about correcting your ears, you are not alone and it is worth it in my opinion.
