Biography

Dr. Sam LamSamuel M. Lam, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Lam was raised in Dallas and finished his secondary education at Cistercian Preparatory School, where he graduated as Valedictorian. He completed his undergraduate studies at Princeton University graduating with a Cum Laude distinction, and his medical school at Baylor College of Medicine, where he received the distinction from his peers of the Bobby R. Alford Award for outstanding achievement in head-and-neck surgery. He then trained for six years at Columbia University specializing in head-and-neck surgery. After completion of his residency, he pursued a competitive post-graduate fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery in New York. He has also spent considerable time abroad studying under prominent Japanese and Korean surgeons to perfect his knowledge of the Asian face after his cosmetic surgery fellowship. His principal training has catered to the occidental face, which his first textbook, Comprehensive Facial Rejuvenation: A Practical and Systematic Guide to Surgical Management of the Aging Face  (Lippincott, Williams, and Wilkins, Philadelphia, PA, 2003/ ISBN: 0-7817-5093-8), addresses. Dr. Lam has spent almost twelve years of specialty training after college and is a dedicated specialist of the face. He is double board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, the American Board of Head & Neck Surgery, and the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. He is also a fellow member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, a fellow member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, and a fellow member of the American College of Surgeons

Dr. Lam has authored over 250 scientific papers and book chapters and has had many of his articles translated into French and Spanish (both of which he speaks). Dr. Lam’s articles have been published in every major plastic surgery journal, including Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery (now Facial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Medicine), Facial Plastic Surgery, Aesthetic Surgery, Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Annals of Plastic Surgery, Dermatologic Surgery, Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery among many others. Dr. Lam has published on the full gamut of facial plastic surgery including fat transfer, browlifting, facelifting, eyelid rejuvenation, midfacelifting, chemical peeling, laser resurfacing, injectable fillers, Botox/MicroBotox/MesoBotox, rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty, hair restoration, ethnic eyelid and nose surgery, facial fracture repair, treatment of congenital malformations, and clinical digital photography. His interest in history, awakened when he was a European history major at Princeton University, has led him to publish many articles on the history and development of facial plastic surgery. He has also published numerous monographs on artists who have influenced his aesthetic perspective and encouraged his entry into painting and creation of his own art.

He has completed work on ten major textbooks, Comprehensive Facial Rejuvenation (Lippincott, 2003), Cosmetic Surgery of the Asian Face (Thieme Medical Publishers, New York, NY, 2005), Complementary Fat Grafting (Lippincott, Williams, and Wilkins, Philadelphia, PA, 2006), Simplified Facial Rejuvenation (Springer Verlag, New York, NY, 2007), and Hair Transplant 360, Volume 1 (2010), Volume 3 (2014), Volume 1 (2nd Edition, 2015), Volume 4 on FUE (2015) and FUE the second edition of Volume 4 (2022) (all by Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers, Ltd., Delhi, India), and Hair Transplant 101 (QMP, 2023). Cosmetic Surgery of the Asian Face was the first major textbook written on Asian facial plastic surgery in the English language with a book review advocating, “No surgeon should be performing Asian cosmetic facial procedures without reading this book and learning from this experienced surgeon.” Comprehensive Facial Rejuvenation was the first major textbook on management of the aging face to include 2 DVDs with 17 separate operative procedures shown. Dr. Lam’s third textbook, Complementary Fat Grafting, revolutionized the way the aging face is perceived and managed. Up until then, all techniques for facial rejuvenation had been based on cutting away and removing tissue. Fat grafting involves restoring lost volume for sunken cheeks, eyes, and jawlines that occur during the aging process. Dr. Lam’s third book dedicated to fat grafting continues to sell well 15 years from its publication date. Dr. Lam’s hair transplant textbook series is one of a kind. There are no other multi-volume hair transplant textbook series that exists; the series contains the largest single volume hair transplant book ever published, and he has published the first book ever on follicular unit excision (FUE). Dr. Lam’s books have been top sellers and have consistently sold out at major scientific meetings and throughout the world, being translated into Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, and Russian.
